1000 Books Before Kindergarten
The Carthage Public Library is taking part in the Nationwide 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. This is a free, at your own pace, program for families to complete at home. Families can enroll in the program anytime from the time their child is born all the way up until they are in kindergarten. Learning to read begins long before a child enters kindergarten. Reading to your children is the best way to prepare them. In as little as fifteen minutes a day, families can build the skills for future success in school and life.
You do not need a library card to enroll in this program.
Children receive a free book, a sticker and a rubber ducky for every 100 books read to them!
FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions):
Why 1000 books before kindergarten?
To help prepare children to be lifelong readers, and to enjoy reading. Reading together also promotes family bonding, and children who are read to have a larger vocabulary by kindergarten than those who are not.
My child likes to read the same book over and over. Is this okay?
That's great; repetition of books is good for children. So if your child asks you to read the same book to them 20 times it counts as 20 books.
What should I read to my child?
Anything! Any books count, from instruction manuals, to chapter books and picture books. Any book that is read to your child counts. Even books on a tablet, or youtube, although we encourage families to read physical books to their children as it helps them learn the proper way to hold a book and how to turn pages. These skills will help them when they enter school.
How much time does this take?
That depends on you and your family. Reading one book per day, this program will take about 2.8 years. The goal of this program is to make reading a habit in your household and part of your child's routine.
Other people read to my child too does this count?
Yes any book that is read to your child counts. It does not have to be one that you read. So books the babysitter reads, that your child hears at the library or that other family members read to your child also count.
How do I participate?
Simple! Sign your child up in person or click on the register button below and complete the form.
Then print out the reading log of your choice or pick one up at the library. You can choose to keep track of titles or to mark off each time someone reads a book to your child. Remember it is okay to repeat books. Bring in your sheets for prizes for every 100 books!
